Sheriff Michael L. Johnson was born and raised in Gilroy, CA. He originally worked at a lumber mill in Gilroy, and then later building/remodeling custom homes as a carpenter. A couple years after working in the trade he decided to return to school. He completed his general college education through night school while employed full time at the lumber mill. Mike was accepted to Humboldt State University in 1991 and moved to Eureka, CA, to pursue his Bachelor of Science degree. In 1994 he took a leave of absence from HSU to attend the California Department of Fish and Game (POST-certified) peace officer academy in Napa, CA. After successfully completing the academy, he returned to HSU and completed his BS degree in Wildlife Management.
Mike went to work for the Eureka Police Department 1996, as a Patrol Officer. He held several specialty positions throughout his law enforcement career, including Evidence Technician, Problem Oriented Policing Unit, Narcotics, K9 Handler, and SWAT. He was a Drug Recognition Expert instructor, teaching courses all across the state including at the CHP academy in Sacramento, CA. Mike also holds California POST Certificates for Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Supervisory, Management and Executive.
In July of 2007 Mike attended the FBI National Academy (FBINA). Shortly after graduating from the FBINA, Mike accepted a position as Chief of Police for the small prison-affiliated City of Ione (Amador County, CA). He worked as Chief of Police in Ione for five years. In 2012 Mike accepted employment as the Chief of Police for the City of Anderson. While employed with the City of Anderson, Mike earned a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from National University. He was employed as the Chief of the Anderson Police Department for over 9 years.
On July 27, 2021, Mike was appointed as the 23rd Shasta County Sheriff.
Michael has been married to his wife Rosemary for 29 years. They have two sons, a 34-year-old hard working resident of San Diego, CA. and a 24-year-old United States Marine Corp veteran currently residing in Shasta County. This year, Michael and Rosemary welcomed their very first grandchild. Michael’s favorite hobbies include hunting, fishing, and dog training.

Michael’s vision is restoring honor, professionalism, and integrity to better Shasta County. He believes that serving the public with dignity and humility will create stronger communities. The Sheriff’s Office has the privilege of serving residents and ensuring the public’s safety – throughout the entire county, which spans a total of 3,847 square miles. Michael’s number one priority is protecting every citizen’s Constitutional rights, liberty and property – Fairly, unbiasedly, and without regard. Michael believes all citizens of Shasta County deserve the utmost level of respect and professionalism.

Oath of Office
On the 27th day of July 2021, Michael L. Johnson was duly appointed as SHASTA COUNTY SHERIFF – CORONER. He proudly took his Oath of Office and was Sworn-In by the Honorable Superior Court Judge Jody Burgess.
I, MICHAEL JOHNSON, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter.

I am honored to be serving the north state, as your Shasta County Sheriff-Coroner and remain committed to delivering the highest quality law enforcement to the communities we serve in this great County.
I promise to lead the Sheriff’s Office with the highest moral principles and ethical standards, honor, and integrity. My strengths include being transparent, forward-thinking, open, honest, and a cooperative partner with our business community, local schools and non-profit organizations.
The Sheriff’s Office takes great pride in our work – caring for our people and their property, protecting them from evil, and enforcing justice. I firmly believe we must earn and keep the public’s trust, and win honor. As your Sheriff-Coroner, along with all the men and women that support this department, we are committed to being good stewards of the public’s trust and proudly work 24-7, 365 to preserve the peace and safety in this County.
We are fortunate to live in a part of California that backs the blue. I promise to extend the utmost respect and professionalism to all of the citizens I am privileged to serve. I will also hold every individual accountable for their actions – this includes myself, the leadership, deputies, and civilians – when they violate County policy or the laws of this state and nation. With that, you can be certain that I will take accountability for what occurs during my watch.
My dedication is to preserve safety – for you, your family, your business, and our futures. I will seek out and work to collaborate with private and public agencies, for the betterment of the Sheriff’s Office, Shasta County and the communities we serve.
I will never compromise my principles & act in the best interest of Shasta County. I look forward to moving the Sheriff-Coroner’s Office forward as a unified and decisive public safety agency over the next four years, continuing my service to you and all residents of Shasta County!
